Biography:

Born in Todi, Italy. Son of Fabricius, of a noble Roman family.

Election

Believing that his election would not be approved by the emperor, Martin chose to consecrate himself shortly after election.

Monothelitism heresy

He condemned the Monothelite heresy. Held the council of Lateran, excommunicating many bishops including Pyrrhus and Paul, patriarch of Constantinople.

Deposed

In 653, Emperor Constans II, who supported Monothelitism, had Martin siezed and brought to Constantinople. A year later, he was banished to Kherson in the Crimea where he later died.
