Became pope by the will of King Theodahad, who wished to block Empress Theodora's choice of deacon Pope Vigilius (537-555), since he was from Constantinople. Being only a sub-deacon, Silverius' election stirred opposition among many clergy, creating the accusation of simony.Deposed
In 537.03, Silverius was deposed by the Byzantine general Belisarius, on charges of consorting with the enemy, Gothic king Vitigis, who's armies advanced to attack Rome. Most likely framed by Empress Theodora. Silverius was reduced to the rank of a monk, and the deacon, Vigilius was setup pope. Silverius went to plea his case before King Justinian I in Constantinople, who supported his claim to the chair, and sent him back to Rome. However, upon arriving back in Italy, Pope Vigilius had him banished to a prison on the island of Palmarola, where he later died.Death
