Pope Boniface II

Biography:

Born in Germany, an Ostrogoth. The Archdeacon to Pope Felix IV.

Election

Minority elected, Boniface II was declared an Antipope. Upon Antipope Dioscoro's (530) early death, Boniface II was made pope, supported by the Ostrogothic King Athalaric of Italy. Once in office, he ordered that Pope Dioscoro be removed from the papal records, and had his supporters sign a retraction vote. However, Pope Agapetus I (535-536) would later have the records destroyed. In 2001, the Vatican accepted Boniface II's wishes, and made Pope Dioscorus an antipope.

He picked Vigilius to be his successor, contrary to canon law. This was condemned by the Bishops, and Boniface eventually revoked his nomination and burned the document. After his death, no successor was appointed for two and a half months.
