Pope Sixtus III

Biography:

Mary worship

The council of Ephesus in 431 decreed that Mary is to be considered divine (Theotokos, "God bearer"), and a church in Rome was later dedicated to her, St Maria Maggiore. The marble columns came from the church of the mother goddess Juno Lucina.

Papal authority

He maintained the authority of the pope over bishops, as well as over the region of lllyria against the Eastern Emperor who wanted it dependent on Constantinople.

Seducing a nun

Sixtus III was criticised as a womanizer, and in 440 was put on trial for seducing a nun. In his defense, he quoted Christ's words, "He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone"
