Election

After the death of Pope Zosimus (417-418), two clerical factions began to dispute for the papacy. One group held up archdeacon Eulalius while another setup Boniface I. Eulalius' group gained access to the Lateran Basilica where new popes were elected. There they setup a vote and elected Eulalius as pope. The following day however, the rival group met in the Church of Theodora where they elected their choice, Boniface.

Emperor Honorius was requested to intervene, the first known interference of papal elections. Undecided himself, Honorius setup a council of Bishops to make the decision. The result of the council was also undecided. Honorius then ordered both popes to leave Rome while a new larger council, which included bishops from Gaul and Africa, deliberated. Eulalius however, returned during this time for Passion Week (Holy Week prior to Easter). Clashes erupted between the two factions, until Imperial forces removed him. The council decided upon Boniface as pope. Eulalius conceded, and later became a bishop under Pope Celestine I.
