Biography:

Due to the persecution under Emperor Valerian, there was no bishop of Rome for almost a year, until the capture of Valerian by the Persians, and tortured to death.

Persecution

Persecutions ended under Emperor Gallienus, who issued an edict of tolerance, and returned land back to the Christians. This peace lasted for over 40 years until 303 AD.

Excommunication

He threatened to excommunicate the bishop of Alexandria, also named Dionysius, as a heretic on the subject of the Trinity. At the resulting synod, the bishop was found not to be a heretic, and was not excommunicated.

Paying ransom

He sent large sums of money to the areas ravaged by the Persians, to ransom captured Christians.

Death

He died of natural causes on 26 December 268.
