Pope Stephen I

Biography:

A Greek born in Rome. The dates of his reign are debated.

Novatian Schism

He supported the readmittance of lapsed Christians, while other bishops refused to, resulting in the "Novatian" schism. In an attempt to gain support, he ordered that anyone wishing to return from the Novatian side could be readmited without rebaptism. Despite many internal criticisms, he readmitted many key controversial Novatians, which greatly weakened the Novatian side. Over the same dispute however, he excommunicated the churches of Africa and Asia Minor, isolating the Roman church.

Second Persecution

Begun under Emperor Valerian (257-258) against those who refused to pay taxes and military service. Valerian executes all bishops, priests, and deacons.

Theology and Priesthood

Ordered that priests are to wear sacred vestments when performing the Mass, and not normal clothing.
Ordered that only priests handle the sacred vestments and vessels.
He reinforced papal judicial authority, and proclaimed the diocese of Rome as head of all matters of theology.

Death

He is listed as a martyr in many records; however, no evidence has been found. Most scholars believe he died natural causes.
